Busting the Myths

Car Accident | Chiropractor Idaho FallsMyth: Most People “injured” in car accidents are faking it.

This may be a surprise but most people who have been injured in a car accident have really been injured.  Some insurance companies have implied that most people who claim injury during a car accidents are frauds trying to make a quick buck.  When two vehicles collide or when your vehicle hits a large inanimate object, it involves hundreds of pounds of metal and steel crashing together at high speeds, the chances of you suffering from some type of injury is pretty high.

For those people who are making fraudulent car accident injury claims, it takes less than a minute for a chiropractor to tell a real injury from a fake one. These claims are few and far between.

Myth: If you have been injured you will feel the pain right away.

Sometimes it can take one to two weeks before you start feeling any pain from a car accident.  How can that be true?

Any inflammation in your muscles can be a result from a car accident.  Inflammation tends to build up over time. It is also common for many people try to take it easy for the first few weeks after an accident. If their neck hurts when they turn it to the right, they will simply stop turning it to the right. A few weeks down the road they may start to realize that the pain isn’t going away and could possibly be getting worse.

There is also the “pain gating” principle. In other words, your body mainly feels or detects the most painful injury and mask the other injuries. Once your most severe injury has been dealt with, you may start to notice additional injuries.

Myth:  Going to a chiropractor after a car accident will make you money off your insurance claim.

This myth exists because of the types of injuries chiropractors treat. Chiropractors specialize in treating injuries to your muscles, nerves, joints, and ligaments. Typically when an individual is a victim of a car accident they suffer from neck, shoulder, or back pain, all injuries chiropractors are best suited to treat.  The chiropractors at Advanced Health in Idaho Falls have additional training and education when it comes to providing chiropractic care to patients with injuries caused by car accidents.

When your insurance claim case comes to an end, typically your insurance company will reimburse you for medical expenses and provide additional compensation for your pain and suffering. Your chiropractor has very little to do with the compensation you receive.

Myth: If your vehicle isn’t seriously damaged, you aren’t either.

Just because your vehicle is tough as nails and didn’t take significant damage during a car accident, doesn’t mean your body went unscathed. If you are involved in collision and you were only going 10 miles per hour you can still suffer from whiplash.

To this day there is no significant research that supports any claim that the degree of car damage is related to the severity of an injury.
